Headache

What is a headache?

It is one of the most common pains. Headaches must be differentiated into acute and chronic; primary and secondary.

The most common chronic primary headaches are:

  • Tension headaches

  • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD)

  • Trigeminal nerve neuralgia

Syndromes

The pains can be:

  • Retro ocular pressure or tension

  • Pain in the nape or neck

  • Pain, stiffness or contracture in the neck area

  • Worse in the afternoon

  • Get relief with rest

  • Calm with the use of pain relievers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen

Acute pains are those that occur alone, without a history,

and will not be discussed in this section.

Secondary pains are those that occur as a consequence of another problem

and will not be discussed in this section.
